Crop: Types & AI Face Locate

Use standard crop ratios, custom dimensions, and AI Face Locate for consistent portrait framing.

Article· 5 min

Crop is a fundamental tool for composition and output sizing. Evoto provides standard aspect ratios, custom dimensions, and AI Face Locate which automatically frames the crop around detected faces — essential for batch headshot processing.

How to do it

  1. Open the Crop tool from the Crop & Rotate module.

  2. Choose a Crop Type: Free Form, Standard Ratios (1:1, 4:5, 3:4, 16:9, etc.), or Custom Dimensions.

  3. Drag the crop handles to adjust framing, or type exact pixel dimensions.

  4. AI Face Locate: enable this to automatically center the crop on the detected face. Perfect for batch processing headshots with consistent framing.

  5. Edge cases: understand how Evoto handles images smaller than the target crop dimensions — it will warn or prevent upscaling.

Try it

Open 5 headshots from a session. Set crop to 4:5 ratio with AI Face Locate enabled. Apply to all 5 and verify consistent head positioning.

Watch out for

  • AI Face Locate may not work on extreme profiles or partially occluded faces.

  • Custom dimensions should match your final output requirement (web, print, social) to avoid reprocessing.
